My Varsity Jacket & 99 Red Balloons.
When I saw varsity jackets were a trend this fall, I remembered the one I had in the mid 80’s. I thought Nena in the 99 Red Balloons video looked so cool walking across some field after the apocalypse in her varsity jacket, so I got one at the mall the next year (they were a trend then too). Years later I saw the video again and realized it wasn’t actually a varsity jacket, it was more like a leather vest over a sweatshirt, but it appeared we did have the same hairstyle. I still felt really cool back then.
Jacket: Brooks, in Eastland Mall in Evansville, around 1985. I liked that the jacket was coincidentally my high school’s colors, and the sleeves were leather.
“Paris” brooch: a mall store in Bloomington, IN where I went to college.
Shirt: the Sycamore Shop in Eastland Mall.
Fiorucci jeans: a boutique in Cincinatti, purchased during a youth group trip to Kings Island. These jeans were awesome. They were cropped, with two red ribbons printed with “Fiorucci” hanging off the hip.
Gold hoop earrings: ?
This photo was taken by Gretchen in downtown Bloomington around 1986, my sophomore year of college.
