What I Wore Today

Spin

I love: the fit of this dress, the exposed zipper, the giant spots.

I never shop at Bloomingdale’s because I figure it’s out of my price range, but the Ladies Room is really awesome.  Somehow I found my way to a half-off-the-sale-price rack, and this was there, waiting for me.

Dress: Bloomingdale’s; Belt: from another dress; Boots: DSW; Bracelet: F21; Sunglasses: Buffalo Exchange; Tights: Bancroft Clothing Co.

Like a Mod Stewardess

And my purse reminds me of a travel bag.  I love the navy accents on this dress, and wearing mostly cream or white always makes me feel really chic—look, I can keep myself clean all day!

I am so happy I got this bag!  The navy/brown combo looks good with so many more things than I imagined.

Dress, stud bracelet, sunglasses: F21; Bag: Coachfactoryoutlet.com; Pumps: 9West; Stud earrings: Joan Rivers for QVC.com.

Tess on Safari

When I found this dress at the Goodwill, it reminded me of Melanie Griffith’s character in Working Girl.  But in these pictures it seemed much more chic, and made me think of YSL and his Safari collection.

Dress: vintage, from the Excelsior Goodwill; Pumps: vintage 60’s Herbert Levine, from Mars on Telegraph; Belt: spiegel.com; Earrings: St. James the Greater flea market in Dogtown (St. Louis); Bracelet: Charlotte Russe; Sunglasses: F21; Tights: Bancroft Clothing Co.

Some Art

I like the little house on the back the best.

Dress: dillards.com; Stockings: White House Black Market; Mary Janes: Goodwill; Bangle: Pink in Burlingame; Earrings: from my mother-in-law.

Hot Topic Adviser

This is kind of like my academic adviser uniform, which I wore because we made a video where I explained the Engineering liberal arts requirement.  And I realized a lot of my outfit was from Hot Topic. I love that store.  Sure, you might take it for granted now, but it was tough back in the early 90’s, trying to shop crazy in middle America.  I was so thankful for Hot Topic.

Pants, belt, bracelet & sunglasses: Hot Topic; Tee: CustomInk.com; Pumps: Shiekh; Earrings: Avril Lavigne for Kohl’s.

Summery

Coming back from this vacation was like that Sunday-night-back-to school-dread, but really amplified.  Hawaii was just so lovely! So I was really happy for the beautiful summer weather in Berkeley.

Dress & necklace: Excelsior Goodwill; Sandals: Elizabeth & James from Loehmann’s; Earrings: from Bevin, from Nepal; Bangles: Claire’s.

Pearl Harbor
I had an actual Uncle Sam who was a Pearl Harbor survivor, and I regret not talking with him about it.  He was a farm kid from Petersburg, Indiana who joined the Navy when he was 17, and would tear up just mentioning that time in his life.  This was at odds with my vision of him, my one adventurous uncle who drove a huge Harley from Indiana to Alaska all by himself when he was around 65.
Dress: Excelsior Goodwill; Sandals: 9 West from DSW; Vintage Mt. Rushmore souvenir scarf & charm bracelet: Evansville Goodwill many years ago; Earrings: Lazarus in Evansville.

Democracy

An awesome day: I sat by the pool and re-read Joan Didion’s Democracy.  It’s set partially in Honolulu, so it’s been on my mind since we got here. It’s like the greatest book ever.  And here’s what I wore.

Swimsuit: blackmilkclothing.com; Cutoffs & hat: Excelsior Goodwill; Purse: Honolulu Goodwill; Flip-flops: Walgreen’s; Sunglasses: Buffalo Exchange.

Palm Tree Pants

Couldn’t stop taking pictures of them.  This outfit seems the furthest from my real life style, but it’s super-fun to be this woman on vacation.

Pants & stud bracelet: F21; Shirt: my husband’s; Hat: Goodwill; Sandals: Target; Bag; Coach Factory Online; Earrings: from my mother-in-law.

My 70’s jetset game is on point today.

P.S. The bird is real.

Waikiki

This is what I wore on the plane (plus leggings and a jacket), but I thought the slides, fabric purse, straw hat and cotton dress made it resort-y.

I came up with a bunch of awesome resort-wear inspired outfits for this week, but now that I’m here, I’m of course just wearing a swimsuit all day.   But I can’t let those outfits go to waste, so if you’ll cut me some slack on the blogging integrity, I think I might have to get dressed, snap a pic, and then go back to my swimsuit.  (“What I Thought About Wearing Today.”)

Dress: vintage 50’s, shortened. Thrifted in Evansville, long ago; Brown slides: Enzo Angiolini, ThriftTown in the Mission; Leopard belt: Banana, thrifted; Straw hat: Excelsior Goodwill; Bag; Coach Factory Online; Earrings: Lazarus in Evansville (now Macy’s), bought for a job interview 24 years ago; Sunglasses: Lola Star on Coney Island.

Backstage/60’s Lounge Singer

There’s a lot of fidgeting and straightening involved in the picture-taking.  I decided to share it because Wendy documented it.  And I’m feeling like Tony in Valley of the Dolls.

Love the way this zebra skirt looks and feels!  Hate the way it rides up all the way to my waist when I walk really fast, which is all the time.  As soon as I got home, I put it in the Goodwill pile.

And on a different note: I’M GOING TO HAWAII TOMORROW!!

Skirt: Oscar, from the Excelsior Goodwill; Blouse: Macy’s; Belt: speigel.com; Jacket: Zara, from the Goodwill; Pumps: Charlotte Russe; Earrings: resale shop in Evansville; Sunglasses: Modcloth.

Drench, day two.

Another rainy day meant devising an outfit around the new rainboots again.  Plaid, stripes, leopard, why not?

Jacket: Target; Dress: Alloy.com; Boots: Drench from doctormartens.com; Scarf: JCP; Earrings: Avril Lavigne for Kohl’s; Sunglasses: Lola Star on Coney Island; Tights: Sears.

Art Gallery Woman

That is what I remind myself of in this outfit.

Skirt: Target; Big top: American Apparel from the Goodwill; Tee: H&M; Scarf: Cotton On (present from my kids); Leggings: Wet Seal; Flats: Born, from the Goodwill; Purse: Coach Factory Online; Earrings: variety store in the Excelsior; Sunglasses: Buffalo Exchange.
