I started my book club 17 years ago, so I think I’ve reached the varsity level by now. Last night was Little Girls in Pretty Boxes, an exposé of elite women’s gymnastics and ice-skating. I loved it because ohmygod how could you not? It was so juicy. I wore this pendant that resembled a gold medal. I threatened to wear a leotard but refrained.
Top: Bloom; Skirt & belt: Goodwill; Scarf: Payless; Boots: Frye, from Astrid’s Rabat; Zipper earrings: Claire’s; Pendant: consignment store in Evansville.

So happy about these awesome leggings.
Even though I know about Mondrian’s design philosophy, which could be the reason this look endures, it still reminds me of L’Oreal hair products from the 80’s.

This is how we dressed in the 90’s.
Lots of jeans this color or lighter, white tees, and black jackets. The jackets were bigger and were called “boyfriend jackets,” which seems funny given that now we have boyfriend jeans. And why is this look all over street style blogs? That’s kind of rhetorical, I mean I know about the fashion cycle, etc., but seriously I wish street style meant a little edgier and subversive than this old look.
I added the hat because I thought oh yeah that makes it fun and above average. And then I remembered midway through the day that my friend Maryanne gave me the hat, and I had left her a note the day before about how much I missed her lately. So there she is in my outfit, and I didn’t even do it on purpose.
Hat: vintage, from Maryanne; Jacket: Banana; Jeans: Alloy.com; Belt: Gap, 20 yrs ago; Shoes: Sheikh; Earrings: from Emily.

At last night’s Oscar party, when I told my friend Laura that this outfit was one of several options I got at a thrift shop long ago just in case, she said there’s a business term for that called “underused capacity.” I’m all about the underused capacity.

I love the brooch-like adornment on the dress, so I tried to echo its decorative vibe with lots of old bracelets and some gargantuan earrings.

I like how the red looks a little like Warhol daisies.
Here’s the last time I wore these pants, where you can see it’s more of a scarf print.

Not Really Professional…
Just kinda. Actually, I don’t think there’s any way that leopard stretch-lace leggings can be construed as professional.

I loved this look from The Blonds! I mixed the key elements—fur, purple, green, spandex, big jewelry, a big print—and this is what I came up with.

There’s kind of a long story about being inspired by the upcoming Mary Blair exhibit, and then matching my pants to those inspired nails, which all go back to It’s a Small World at Disneyland.
