The blond wig I wore as Bonnie in yesterday’s post made me miss being a blond. Here’s the last time I was blond, ten years ago. I like it! I think I want to go back. It’s just the sitting there forever waiting for the color to “lift” or something I don’t really get. Hours and hours.
Top pic: That’s the Hollywood sign way in the back. I have on my very favorite earrings ever, gears, which I’ve since lost, and a favorite vintage 70’s photoprint surfer shirt, which I got in a free box at an antique store in Bloomington, IN. I used to wear it with a plaid school uniform skirt (hemmed) and red Adidas Sambas. Photo by King somewhere in LA, December 2003.
Bottom pic: I think this was our holiday card that year. I loved that leopard coat, which was vintage 60’s from a thrift store. Also note the green Christmas tree light earrings, a gift from Chiara. Photo by Barbara at the St. Louis Zoo, Thanksgiving day, 2003.
Bonnie & Clyde
After Kelly and Cliff’s wedding, they had a Hollywood-themed costume party.
Kelly and I bonded over costumes long ago. In 1994, we were both Resident Directors on Semester at Sea, and before our first staff training, we all had to submit pictures of ourselves that were sent to everyone. When Kelly saw the picture of me in my Disco Statue of Liberty Halloween costume, she decided we would be best friends. On SAS, we tried to turn every event into a costume event. In 1997, Kelly was the “officiant” as King & I said our vows at our Vegas-themed costume wedding.
Yay for costumes!
Skirt & scarf: ThriftTown; Sweater: Clothes Contact; Shoes & purse: Excelsior Goodwill; Wig: thrifted in St. Louis long ago; Beret: Nordstrom; Glam gun: (actually a pendant with the chain removed): Spirit Halloween store.

I couldn’t figure out what to wear to Kelly and Cliff’s wedding, so I thought of what she wore to my wedding 16 years ago: an awesome brown double-breasted suit with leopard trim and leopard pumps. So she was my inspiration.
When we got to the wedding, there was leopard everywhere—on Kelly, on the programs, on the flowers, on the cake. I felt pretty connected to her, which made me feel really good, because we’d lost touch a little bit over the years.
Coat (worn as dress): vintage 60’s, from the Evansville Antique Mall; Hat & gloves: vintage 60’s, thrifted from the Evansville St. Vincent de Paul; Gold beads: Community Thrift in the Mission; Pearls & earrings: Macy’s; Bangle: thrifted; Pumps: 9 West; Purse: thrifted from my neighborhood Goodwill; Sunglasses: F21; Beige fishnets: Nordstrom.
Most of this outfit was purchased in the early 90’s.
Photos by King at First Presbyterian Church in Mahopoc, NY, which has a cemetery with headstones of people born in 1709! I was remarking on this to Cliff, who’s from England, and he was like, yeah there’s a wall on our property from 813.
Aboard the USS Intrepid at Pier 86 in Manhattan. Sweater: J. Crew; Skirt: thrifted vintage 1960’s.
Here’s some public art for ya. There are five of these sculptures all over campus. I like this one best because the reflecting pool is doing its job so nicely.
I’m in NYC right now! We’re going to a wedding on Sunday. Not just any wedding—a COSTUME wedding! The theme is Hollywood, so I’ll get back to you with some pictures later. But for now, this is an outfit from last week. The skirt was the driving force. I’m always into dark denim skirts, I think because once a long time ago, I saw a woman wearing such a skirt, with tan stiching and tan boots, and it looked cool. So it’s some kind of Pavlovian response when I see these skirts.
Skirt: thrifted from my neighborhood Goodwill; Shirt: Factory2U; Shoes: 9 West; Socks: Payless; Pendant, bracelets and sunglasses: thrifted.

Studs at the Airport
The conference in Salt Lake City is over, so now I’m just hangin’ out by the moving walkway, waiting for my flight.
I will never tire of this stud photo-print dress, and how excited I get to match the jewelry.
Dress: JCPenney; Jacket: H&M; Jeans: Alloy.com; Boots: Dr. Marten’s store in the Haight; Stud bracelets: F21; Stud earrings: Avril Lavigne for Kohl’s.

Conference Outfit Day 2
Packed in a hurry, needed something easy, love the weird shape and Jackson Pollack print. This is actually one of my favorite dresses. The sweater was necessary for warmth, and I went with it against my better judgement, in an effort to branch out to beige. (In the past, I’ve worn it like this and this.)
This outfit wasn’t particularly awesome, but my new friend Jacinta was.
Dress, black bangle & tights: Sears; Boots: Dr. Marten’s store in the Haight; Cardigan: Bloom; Silver bangle: Bebe; Earrings: from Kate; Pendant: thrifted years ago in Evansville; Sunglasses: Air & Space Museum gift shop.

It was school spirit day at the NACADA* Conference, and obviously you don’t have to ask me twice to dress for a theme. Olivia (my new friend and colleague) noticed there were bears in our hotel lobby, so, you know, FIRE UP!!!
When I was packing this stuff, I realized that of the six institutions I’ve worked at, Cal is the only one where I’ve chosen to buy the branded garments. Nice graphics? Extra concern for the football team? Or maybe…prestige and social capital?
Cal shirt & hoodie: Cal Student Store; Jeans: Alloy.com; Boots: Doctor Martens store in the Haight; Bag: Coach, from Macy’s; Bracelets: Wet Seal, F21, thrifted; Sunglasses: Lola Star on the Coney Island Boardwalk.
(Note the “68” on my shirt refers to 1868, when UC Berkeley was founded.)

Spotted Wedding Guest
I went to an awesome wedding this weekend. It was so fun to wear this special dress to celebrate some special people! Their wedding was coincidentally on King and I’s 16th anniversary, and we got a shoutout from the bride.
Dress: Nordstrom; Hat: vintage 50’s, from The Material Plane in Bloomington, IN; Bolero: vintage, from ThriftTown in the Mission; Pumps: 9 West; Purse: vintage 60’s, from an antique store in Brown Co., IN; Necklace: Hot Topic; Gloves: Jessica McClintock Outlet; Earrings: Avril Lavigne for Kohl’s; Sunglasses: Mars on Telegraph; Stockings: drugstore.

Black & Cream
I got this outfit in August, thinking it would be great for the first day of school (I still like to do that—perhaps making up for all the outfits I wanted but couldn’t have in elementary school). I forgot that I wouldn’t be working on the first day of classes! So I’m just getting around to wearing it now.
I was super-excited to find these shoes. I used to have a vintage 70’s pair of black and white platform spectators that wore out, so these are a nice replacement. I love the zipper detail.
Dress: Marshall’s; Shoes: Via Spiga, from Loehmann’s; Jacket: H&M; Bangle: Sears; Earrings: from Bevin, from Nepal; Sunglasses: Aldo Accessories.

An Outfit for Rayna
OMG can you believe Juliette? Rayna’s in a coma and Juliette’s using it to launch her album?!
Top: F21; Belt: Urban Wear, in the Excelsior; Jeans: Target; Pumps: Howcool.com; Earrings: Jessica McClintock Outlet; Spike bracelet: Charlotte Russe; Others: thrifted and a gift; Sunglasses: Bancroft Clothing Co.

Now that’s what I’m talkin’ about!
Head to toe patterns. All clothes should be like this. Why go around with plain clothes?
Pants & shirt: JCPenney; Belt: Gap, 23 yrs ago; Loafers: Bass Outlet; Earrings: Sears; Sunglasses: Air & Space Museum gift shop.

Don’t Trust the B_ _ _ _ in Apt. 23
I never watched that show, mostly because I found the title so annoyingly clunky. And then, the one time I just happen to land on it for a few minutes, I got drawn in by Krysten Ritter’s cute outfit—a red dress and leopard coat— like I’d never seen that combo together or something. I obsessed and hunted for a while, then duplicated it on a date night late last spring.
Coat: F21; Dress: Foreign Exchange; Purse: Target; Pumps: Pour La Victoire from DSW; Tights & bracelet: Sears: Necklace: Thrifted in Evansville long ago; Earrings: Kohl’s; Sunglasses: thrifted from the Bloomington Goodwill.

And on an exciting note, my new job advising engineering students starts today!
